Herons, egrets, cormorants, and eagles are often seen here. With light wind, we may paddle into the LI Sound. Boat traffic is heavy in the inlet and near the marinas so we must be cautious. Must wear a floatation device while in your boat. Bring a beverage and sun protection. Any rain or wind over 17 mph cancel. ROCKY POINT PINE BARRENS EXPLORATION

ELIZABETH MORTON NATIONAL WILDLIFE REFUGE

Wildlife Viewing- Morton Refuge is an ideal spot for wildlife watching while hiking the Wild Birds Nature Trail and along the beach at low tide (hard packed sand). Wildlife have become acclimated to visitors and often go about their day without a second glance. Eastern wild turkeys, songbirds and chipmunks all can be seen along the wooded sections of the trail. Osprey can be seen flying overhead hunting for fish in the bay. In the winter, large groups of black ducks, bufflehead and common goldeneye can be seen floating in the bay. KAYAK BROWNS RIVER, BAYPORT

Park only in a marked parking space! Enter the river through a reeded narrow opening then paddle north through a protected marsh where we usually see plenty of birds (e.g. marsh wrens, herons, red wing blackbirds). Learn the importance of marshes and how seasonal changes affect them and their inhabitants. Wind permitting, some of us can pass by the start point into the Great South Bay. COLD SPRING HARBOR OUT AND BACK

We’ll do the first few miles of the Nassau-Suffolk Greenbelt Trail by continuing past Route 108 to Stillwell Lane, then we’ll turn around and retrace our steps. If you stop at the Old Field beach, stretch your legs, eat your self-provided munchies, enjoy the natural world around you, and maybe take a swim while some of us go to the Setauket Pond mill. BETHPAGE ST PARK RED & WHITE TRAILS
5-6 miles – fast – mainly flat. Info: Tammy, 631-896-1409, between 6-9pm. We’ll start on the Red Trail and pick up some of the White trail (aka the Nassau-Suffolk Greenbelt Trail) within the park. Directions: NY-135 exit 8, Powell Ave. Head east and make a quick left into the park towards the picnic area and polo field. Follow the road past the toll booth and head left into the picnic area parking lot. No parking fee after 5pm. We’ll meet in the southeast corner of the lot, which is closest to the entrance.
CAUMSETT BEACH TREK

KAYAK CARMENS RIVER, SHIRLEY

The short trip will go to a spot along the river before returning. The longer trip goes to a beach on Bellport Bay (wind permitting) or explores a channel or two. Learn about the condition of the river, spartina and phragmites plants, and take note of changes in the flora as we transition from the fresher to the saltier water and higher to lower ground. Learn about the creatures that inhabited the shells we find at the bay beach. Identify the birds (e.g. herons, egrets, marsh wrens, redwing blackbirds, gulls, cormorants, osprey, and maybe eagles), plants (e.g. reeds, spartina grasses, seaweeds) and other species we encounter (previously seen: muskrat, raccoon, and turtles). Park wherever you can find a space. On the paddle, identify water birds, learn to read water currents and channel markers, and hopefully see schools of surface fish (menhaden a.k.a. bunker). Must wear a floatation device while in your boat. Bring a beverage and sun protection. Any rain or wind over 17 mph cancel. A Port-a-Potty is south of the put in. COLD SPRING HARBOR OUT AND BACK

We’ll do the first few miles of the Nassau-Suffolk Greenbelt Trail by continuing past Route 108 to Stillwell Lane, then we’ll turn around and retrace our steps. This trail has some nice hills to make sure we get a great workout. This is not a beginner hike. Bring water and trail snacks, and a hiking pole is recommended. KAYAK BULLSHEAD BAY & SCALLOP POND, SOUTHAMPTON

It’s one of the Island’s best quiet spots to paddle and explore. Learn how to read tides, currents, and channel markers. TERRELL RIVER/KALER'S POND PARKS

ELIZABETH MORTON NATIONAL WILDLIFE REFUGE

Wildlife Viewing- Morton Refuge is an ideal spot for wildlife watching while hiking the Wild Birds Nature Trail and along the beach at low tide (hard packed sand). Wildlife have become acclimated to visitors and often go about their day without a second glance. Eastern wild turkeys, songbirds and chipmunks all can be seen along the wooded sections of the trail. Osprey can be seen flying overhead hunting for fish in the bay. In the winter, large groups of black ducks, bufflehead and common goldeneye can be seen floating in the bay. An elevated platform at the beach allows visitors an outstanding view of Little Peconic Bay, Noyack Bay and Jessup’s Neck Peninsula’s wildlife species. GPS: 2595 Noyack Road, Sag Harbor, NY 11963.
