We’ll do the first few miles of the Nassau-Suffolk Greenbelt Trail by continuing past Route 108 to Stillwell Lane, then we’ll turn around and retrace our steps.  This trail has some nice hills to make sure we get a great workout.  This is not a beginner hike.  Bring water and trail snacks, and a hiking pole is recommended. We will meet at the north entrance gate to Connetquot State Park (walk in- no cars) and hike a portion of the L.I. Trail to the fish hatchery and back. Bring water, insect/tick protection; rain cancels. From the L. I.  Expressway take exit 58 south onto Veterans Memorial Highway (Route 454), continue about 1 ½  miles to the park entrance- just past the intersection with Connetquot Ave. (look for pedestrian crossing with flashing traffic light); park along the right side of the road on grass area off shoulder; from Sunrise Highway and points east, take Veterans Highway (Route 454) north about 6 miles to the intersection with Connetquot Ave., make a U turn and head south on Veterans Highway a short distance and park to the right.

Given the closure of the Mill Pond/Harbor Road entrance for Avalon Preserve, we will meet at the entrance off of Shep Lane, Smithtown.  Directions: FROM THE LIE, Take EXIT 62 (C.R. 97, or Nicolls Road) NORTH until it ends at Route 25A in Stony Brook. Turn LEFT onto 25A and proceed approximately 1.5 miles to Main Street. Turn LEFT at the light onto Main Street. Go about 1 mile and turn RIGHT on Shep Lane (Ashleigh Drive is just before Shep Lane). Drive down Shep Lane about 1.5 miles (paved and unpaved road). Medium size parking area (about 12 spots) on left. If you reach Harbor Road, you’ve gone slightly too far. Wear hiking shoes. Bring water. Rain cancels.

SUN. NOV. 17 - ELIZABETH A. MORTON NATIONAL WILDLIFE REFUGE

Wildlife Viewing- Morton Refuge is an ideal spot for wildlife watching. Most visitors enjoy watching wildlife while hiking the Wild Birds Nature Trail. Wildlife have become acclimated to visitors and often go about their day without a second glance. Eastern wild turkeys, songbirds and chipmunks all can be seen along the wooded sections of the trail. Osprey can be seen flying overhead hunting for fish in the bay. In the winter, large groups of black ducks, bufflehead and common goldeneye can be seen floating in the bay. An elevated platform at the beach allows visitors an outstanding view of Little Peconic Bay, Noyack Bay and Jessup’s Neck Peninsula’s wildlife species. GPS: 2595 Noyack Road, Sag Harbor, NY 11963. We’ll do the first few miles of the Nassau-Suffolk Greenbelt Trail by continuing past Route 108 to Stillwell Lane, then we’ll turn around and retrace our steps.  This trail has some nice hills to make sure we get a great workout.  This is not a beginner hike.  Bring water and trail snacks, and a hiking pole is recommended. Come join us on a New Year’s Day hike through Bethpage State Park. Look for signs of rabbits, hawks, fox, and owls along the trail. Bring water & snack; hike goes in rain, snow, or shine, only blizzard cancels. Exit points each mile will be posted along the way to allow you to shorten the hike length and return to the parking lot. The park staff can transport you back in golf carts.

Meeting place: Bethpage State Park, Picnic area parking lot near playground and rest rooms. From Rt 135: Take exit 8 to Powell Ave, Bethpage; go east; the first road on the north side is the entrance to the Polo Field and Picnic area. Go to the end of the road and you will be at the Rest Rooms and Playground area. No age restriction. Arrive early as park generally has giveaways and may have a raffle for an Empire Pass. Morton Refuge is an ideal spot for wildlife watching. Most visitors enjoy watching wildlife while hiking the Wild Birds Nature Trail. Wildlife have become acclimated to visitors and often go about their day without a second glance. Eastern wild turkeys, songbirds and chipmunks all can be seen along the wooded sections of the trail. Osprey can be seen flying overhead hunting for fish in the bay. In the winter, large groups of black ducks, bufflehead and common goldeneye can be seen floating in the bay. An elevated platform at the beach allows visitors an outstanding view of Little Peconic Bay, Noyack Bay and Jessup’s Neck Peninsula’s wildlife species. GPS: 2595 Noyack Road, Sag Harbor, NY 11963. SUN, SEP 29 - COLD SPRING HARBOR OUT AND BACK

9:00am – 5.3 miles – fast – hilly.  Info: Tammy, 631-896-1409, between 6-9pm. 

We’ll do the first few miles of the Nassau-Suffolk Greenbelt Trail by continuing past Route 108 to Stillwell Lane, then we’ll turn around and retrace our steps.  This trail has some nice hills to make sure we get a great workout.  This is not a beginner hike.  Bring water and trail snacks, and a hiking pole is recommended. Heavy rain cancels, light rain does not; call morning of hike if unsure.  Directions:  We’ll meet at the Nassau-Suffolk Greenbelt Trailhead on Harbor Rd. (NY25A), in the unpaved parking lot adjacent to the Cold Spring Harbor Library.

Given the closure of the Mill Pond/Harbor Road entrance for Avalon Preserve, we will meet at the entrance off of Shep Lane, Smithtown.  Directions: FROM THE LIE, Take EXIT 62 (C.R. 97, or Nicolls Road) NORTH until it ends at Route 25A in Stony Brook. Turn LEFT onto 25A and proceed approximately 1.5 miles to Main Street. Turn LEFT at the light onto Main Street. Go about 1 mile and turn RIGHT on Shep Lane (Ashleigh Drive is just before Shep Lane). Drive down Shep Lane about 1.5 miles (paved and unpaved road). Medium size parking area (about 12 spots) on left. If you reach Harbor Road, you’ve gone slightly too far. Wear hiking shoes. We will be hiking the red, green and orange trails along with the L.I. Greenbelt, which traverses the park. There's a lovely pond and shady wide trails that make this park a great hiking spot. If you'd like to stay after, bring lunch. Rain cancels. Meet in the parking lot. There may be a fee or free with Empire Passport. Take Northern State Pkwy. to the end onto NY 347. Go left at Old Willets Path up to NY 25.  Turn right and park entrance will be on your left. From the east take NY 25 past the Smithtown Bull to park entrance on the right.  Bring water and snack.
