Let's have a wonderful weekend hike in this interesting nature preserve.  There are observation areas to check out the birds & other wildlife, well maintained wide trails and a wonderful Visitor's Center with restrooms and a Gift Shop.  Take the LIE (495) to exit 68 (William Floyd)  south to Montauk Highway (80).  Go West (right) to Smith St.  Make a left and Wertheim is on the right. about 1/2 mile or so.

Given the closure of the Mill Pond/Harbor Road entrance for Avalon Preserve, we will meet at the entrance off of Shep Lane, Smithtown.  Directions: FROM THE LIE, Take EXIT 62 (C.R. 97, or Nicolls Road) NORTH until it ends at Route 25A in Stony Brook. Turn LEFT onto 25A and proceed approximately 1.5 miles to Main Street. Turn LEFT at the light onto Main Street. Go about 1 mile and turn RIGHT on Shep Lane (Ashleigh Drive is just before Shep Lane). Wildlife Viewing- Morton Refuge is an ideal spot for wildlife watching. Most visitors enjoy watching wildlife while hiking the Wild Birds Nature Trail. Wildlife have become acclimated to visitors and often go about their day without a second glance. Eastern wild turkeys, songbirds and chipmunks all can be seen along the wooded sections of the trail. Osprey can be seen flying overhead hunting for fish in the bay. In the winter, large groups of black ducks, bufflehead and common goldeneye can be seen floating in the bay. An elevated platform at the beach allows visitors an outstanding view of Little Peconic Bay, Noyack Bay and Jessup’s Neck Peninsula’s wildlife species. GPS: 2595 Noyack Road, Sag Harbor, NY 11963. Come join us on a New Year’s Day hike through Bethpage State Park. Look for signs of rabbits, hawks, fox, and owls along the trail. Exit points each mile will be posted along the way to allow you to shorten the hike length and return to the parking lot. The park staff can transport you back in golf carts.

From Rt 135: Take exit 8 to Powell Ave, Bethpage; go east; the first road on the north side is the entrance to the Polo Field and Picnic area. Take a tour of Montauk’s largest park on a hike through Hither Hills and Hither Woods State Parks and Suffolk County’s Lee Koppelman Preserve.  We’ll enjoy the forest and the Block Island Sound coast, and we’ll pass a couple of large glacial erratics.  Meet 10:00 a.m. at Hither Hills Overlook (West Overlook), north side of Route 27, Montauk.  Distance: ~6 miles, moderate pace with some hills.  Bring lunch & liquids.  Info only, call Rick: (631) 275-8539. Designated as the first "State Park Preserve" in New York, Connetquot River encourages the long-term protection of our ecological, cultural  and historic resources. Come for a 3-4 mile hike and discover the way Long Island used to be. Registration required. Not stroller accessible. Call 631-581-1072 for more details and how to register.

Our “Annual N-S on the N-S Trail” Hike!  We’ll meet at the south end of the trail, then leave some cars and drive the rest to CSH, where we’ll hike the full north-south length of the Nassau-Suffolk Greenbelt Trail.  Full details when you call to register.  This is a full day hike, so staying together is important—please be willing to hike at leader’s pace, even if slower than you usually like to go.  Bring water, lunch, trail snacks, and determination.  Heavy rain cancels, light rain does not; call morning of hike if unsure.  Directions: NY-135 to the Merrick Road exit.  Head east about a mile and make a left onto Ocean Ave just before the lake.  Park on Ocean Ave. close to Merrick Rd.
